My Journey towards fitness has taken a number of twist and turns over the past 3 years. Finally taking the last corner that brought me to CrossFit. 3 years ago I weight 295 and was tragically out of shape. I have always been a fat person. Always. It started off when I was a baby. I was born at about 6 pounds and I doubled that to 12 lbs in a week. By the time I was 8 months old I was moving the furniture my mother used to block the refrigerator in order to get to the food. By the time I could speak I was sneaking
butter sandwiches when no one was looking. No, not toast, Butter on white bread.
Blessed with an over active digestive system I turned into the classic fat kid. No cardiovascular activities for me. I was destined for a place on the Offensive Line of the high
school football team by the time I was 6. I was lucky enough that my parents made me play hockey which allowed me to develop some decent foot speed and quickness but also turned me into a complete anaerobic athlete. Short bursts of activity with long rest became my go-to physical activity.
Fast forward 5 years to my post college life. The only thing that changed was I had gotten weaker, fatter, and slower. I moved to Texas where a level of isolation promoted
by being an obnoxious Yankee in a foreign land gave me an opportunity to focus on myself and not cop out with the “oh but my friends want to go out to dinner” type of
excuse. I started by simply walking the golf course 3 times a week. I lost 30 lbs with virtually no effort. I eat all natural foods for the most part (God bless Whole Foods) and
walked 15 miles a week with a 35 lb bag on my back.
After my first golf season in Texas I turned my focus into the gym and cleaning up my diet. Having always been a bit of gym rat regardless of my size I made the
transition into the gym over the winter and really went about changing my life. A low GI diet and a solid workout plan focused around sprint workouts and heavy lifts in
the gym got me down another 30 lbs. A solid cardio regiment took of the next 15 lbs.
Then Crossfit came into my life. A friend had helped me set up my first few workout plans and he had had recently gotten into CF. He suggested it for me constantly. I had
already started Paleo about 6 months earlier and in December 2009 I jumped into CF. I started off at CF Central in Austin with Carey Keplar and Jeremy Theil. I was hooked after my first WOD. My plans got disrupted by my abrupt move back east but I was very pleased to learn of the existence of Albany CF. I came into our gym as soon as I got back east and continued to get better. I’ve been working through my suck list for some time now and am starting to get a good grasp on all the basics. I still need to work on my upper body strength and some of my cardio vascular limitations, but all good things come
to those willing to work. So we just keep pushing and I’ll get better. Jay and the team could not be better and I am pumped with all the things we do on a daily basis. I have to
make sure I feed the beast appropriately and do not over train but I feel like these are not bad problems too have. I continue to preach the benefits of Paleo and CF to everyone I know almost to the point where people do not want to hear about it any more. But who cares, that is their loss.
CrossFit workouts, values and nutritional philosophy have truly brought me tomy healthy tipping point. I have been an athlete since I was 3-years old alwaysin dance, horseback riding, track, tennis lessons, skiing, biking, snowshoeing, hiking, softball and soccer; you name it I’ve done it. So until college I neverhad to program exercise into daily life. I tried to stay active and to like exercise
usually deferring to running or yoga but never really felt one workout worked forme well enough to commit to it as a lifestyle.
In my post-academic life I found that I was falling more and more out of shape. Each ski and hiking season were so difficult for me I’d avoid all trips or make up excuses not to go because I was embarrassed at how out of shape I was. After I got engaged in the Fall of 2008 I really started to worry about my health and fitness. I wanted to be able to do all the things my husband and I talked about
doing together – climbing the Adirondack High Peaks, hiking our way through the National Parks, skiing and snow-shoeing as much as possible and going on some long bike tours. I kept working myself up on weekends to commit to a new running regime each Monday but every week came and went and I was still doing the same old.
In April 2009, with the help and encouragement of my friend Lindsey, I joined Albany CrossFit. I became addicted almost immediately. It was the mix of competition, support and push I needed. I was so excited that I was lifting more and more weight each week and hitting PRs. I was pushing myself to do things I
wasn’t comfortable doing before, or things I thought my body couldn’t do. Being surrounded by constant support and guidance pushed me to my limits and made
me do a fitness-education-360.
As far as nutrition I’ve experimented with vegetarianism on and off for at least 5 or 6 years before joining CrossFit. I was super uneducated and uninformed in my nutritional choices though – I ate pasta, bagels and bread at nearly every meal. Reluctantly, I started the Zone in June 2008 and soon after transitioned to the Paleo diet, which I’ve been following (most of the time) ever since. When
I am eating super clean and strict I perform and feel my best and recover from workouts quickly. I am unafraid to try new activities and have tons more energy than I use to because of CrossFit. Sometimes I find myself talking about it to friends and feeling like a saleswoman but it is really that life changing and wonderful I feel obligated to tell people. Anyone can really do it, no matter how out of shape you might think you are or un-athletic you might be. CrossFit makes everyone an athlete, as well as a positive and confident individual.
"I've been doing Crossfit since June of 2009. It has become a part of my life in every aspect and will continue to be a part of my life. It has helped me develop as an individual mentally and physically. I am amazed at the improvement in my physique and my positive attitude. I have been an athlete my whole life, even throughout college playing volleyball. After graduating I would participate in pick up games but it did not keep me committed physically. Neither did a regular gym. A friend suggested Crossfit. Since I have joined ACF I have been commited and looking forward to it everyday since.
My first WOD was "tabata revolver" and I was scared to death, but a friend who joined right before me said "who cares if you dont finish on time, as long as you finish or beat your last score/set of rounds. As long as you finish the WOD, you will keep getting better." It helped me to maintain the attitude to finish things in life. I do not have favorite WOD per say but I do enjoy "Fran" and "Cindy". Watch out girls Rachel may be a new favorite WOD (hehe)! I just love being able to come to Crossfit and working on something new everyday. The positive changes are what got me hooked. HOOK... LINE... AND... SINKER!"
I started Crossfit back in February 2009 after much persuasion (I’m talking about a year and a half) from my friend and one of ACF’s finest, Jess Lasky. What finally convinced me to drink the crossfit kool-aid, as if getting in shape and meeting great people wasn’t enough, was a weekend away with Jess and two more of ACF’s finest, Andrea Devlin and Erin Lasky. The car ride to NJ and back was filled with talk of ACF and “Fran” and “Diane”, etc. Needless to say it was a different language to me, and one I was finally convinced I needed to learn. I made the decision that I was joining on the way home from that trip; showed up for Elements with Matt Franco (another of ACF's finest) that week and haven’t looked back since. I can honestly say that I enjoy working out now because everyday I come into ACF I know I’ll be doing something different than the day before and there will always be room for improvement, whether it is having better form, or getting stronger or faster. I have done things I never thought I would, or could, for that matter, and the great people and constant encouragement truly make this ACF an awesome place to come after a long day at work. My favorite workouts are ones with dead lifts and handstand pushups. My least favorite workouts are ones that involve burpees.
My boyfriend, Caleb, introduced me to Crossfit in Jan 09. I often poked fun at him ecause it was all he ever talked about, and since it was such a huge part of his life, I thought I would learn more about it. I pseudo attempted the movements, and, even away at school, noticed an incredible difference from walking the stairmaster to (kind of) tackling a WOD. It was then that I promised myself I would join a Crossfit Gym when I came home, and so I did (and dragged my father "Ahnold" into it). I already feel stronger and more efficient, and I have only been a member since the beginning of June 09. I've been involved in sports for the majority of my life (competitive swimming for 8 years) and had to stop when I got to college. When I come to Crossfit, it fills the void I've had since I started college. Now, 4 years later, I've finally found my amazing alternative. Not only do I strive to master high intensity movement and strength, but also technique and overall agility. I look forward to coming everyday and absolutely love the community. I feel more confident in everything I do. Hands down, best decision ever.
Started January 09
I started crossfit a couple weeks after a coworker told me about it as well as the paleolithic diet. I was interested in the importance of fitness because around the same time, I was suffering from some serious health problems, back and forth to the doctor and always feeling ill. With that, I was getting ready to move, and moving in the dead of winter with little to no help is frustrating in itself and made me even more sick. I was a bit skeptical of crossfit when I first heard about it. I did a lot of research and while I really wasn't aiming to change much physically, I was hoping maybe this program would be the answer to some of the health issues and just give me better confidence about myself. My first couple weeks were so painful I had trouble even doing things like driving. But afterwards I got stronger, faster and felt 100% all the time. With that, I was on and off paleo, and noticed some changes in my energy levels as well as the way I looked. Crossfit combined with a paleolithic diet as cured me of many of the problems I was facing, has made me more confident and it is something that I love doing despite my noticeable clumsiness with wall balls and open dislike for burpees. Since moving to New York last year, Albany Crossfit has been the only group I really feel a part of as an athlete and friend.
Age 44. Started August 11, 2008.
One of CrossFit's finest, Viv, introduced me to the wonderful world of WODs. I have always been athletic and a hard worker, but listening to her describe the workouts scared the heck out of me, considering I have gained about 30 lbs. over the past ten years. On top of the extra weight, I have a nagging back issue. During my college years I had been hospitalized for two weeks for a ruptured disc in my lower back. Since then, I have always had back problems, but I tried to do everything to avoid flare-ups. No matter what I did, running, karate, aerobics, I always seemed to have problems. I knew I had a weak core, so I was extremely nervous about tackling a CrossFit workout.
I never thought for a moment I would be able to do deadlifts, thrusters, or squats. Viv assured me everyone worked at their own pace and scaled the workouts as necessary. The first night was tough....and it was basically just the warm up. I loved it! Another one of CrossFit's finest, Niki, talked me through it, and she has been there for me ever since. It's almost like having a personal trainer. If she's not available, someone else steps in. Sometimes I don't even know my own strength, afraid to push forward, but Jason is right there telling me to go for it. I trust him dearly, and he's always right.
I am truly amazed at some of the things I have accomplished in less than a year: 230 lb deadlift, 170 lb squat, power cleans, thrusters. It's the hardest thing I have ever done, but I feel like a million bucks after it's over. I have never felt this good in my life. I am a Senior Court Reporter in Albany County Court, and I sit literally for hours and hours. Sometimes I can't make class due to my schedule, and that is when I really begin to ache. I never thought "sitting" too long would be the culprit, but it is. I hope to be in the best shape of my life by 50.
Both of my sons, Alex and George, are completely addicted. It has changed all of our lives. We often say, "How did we survive so long without CrossFit?" It truly is like having a second family. I have three sisters, one of which is my twin, and they are from the Utica area. I send them pictures and videos from our workouts, and they are proud of my hard work. My husband of 20 years, Steve, always encourages me to go for it, even if I don't think I can. He tells me I don't give myself enough credit, to never give up and keep pushing. He "holds down the fort" while my sons and I get our butts kicked. He doesn't participate in CrossFit yet, but he supports all of us. He cooks, cleans, and does anything we need ( I really think he just likes getting the three of us out of the house). I am blessed to have such a wonderful family, and I am so thankful that we can spend our time together at CrossFit. It is absolutely the best gift of all.
I started hitting crossfit WOD’s when a friend got me into it while I was deployed in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. When returning home I try to knockout WOD’s at a local gym, until one fateful day when some guy noticed my crossfit hoodie. He sent me to meet Jason at AFC and thank god. I love the atmosphere at ACF and the coaches and people here are great.
At ACF I have hit some PR’s quicker then I could alone, and pushing myself to hit some weights I never imagined before. I like hitting up dead lifts and back squats. My personal goals are to get MU’s without kipping, 68 pushups in 1 min (for my Army pt test), 300lbs back squats, and a 4min or under “Fran”.
“Fran”,’ Cindy”, and “Mary” are three of my favorite ladies, besides my wife Katie and my daughter Natalie. In the summer I’m going back to school for Criminal Justice with an over all goal of becoming a police officer.
I have been with CrossFit since March of 2008. Before CrossFit I jogged for 20+ years, doing several 5K runs a year, a couple of 10K races and one 1/2 marathon. 10+ years of aerobics and two years of kick boxing was my exercise program.
Crossfit is now my exercise program! My favorite WOD is anything that involves thrusters or lifting. I like box jumps, climbing the rope or getting on the rings for “skin the cat”. Basically I just like hanging, on anything, bars, ropes and rings. My hardest WOD involves rowing. My goals are to lift heavy weights and get a better string of consecutive pull-ups. I like pushing myself and I’m always up for a “friendly” challenge.
Since starting CrossFit I have taken the Cert. 1 class, Gymnastics Cert class and I will be attending the Barbell Cert class in March 2009. I like knowing everything I can about CrossFit and I enjoy sharing that with others. I find it extremely beneficial in watching the CrossFit videos and reading about the forms and techniques. I occasionally fill in as trainer and find a lot of pleasure and reward in that.
I started the Zone diet in August of 2008 and I love it. I am now measuring better and balancing my meals better. I not only lost 18lbs but I have more strength and energy then I ever had.
Outside of CrossFit, my favorite past time is reading and research. For 7 years I have taught 9th grade religion class. This year’s challenge was to teach 22 students about God who didn’t want to be there. My reading therefore is a lot on theology.
I am currently taking voice lessons and practicing the guitar. I love to sing and I really enjoy playing the guitar. My goal is to sing at Grace Fellowship church.
My coolest past time, besides shopping and the movies with my daughter Stacey, is riding my Harley Davidson 1200 Sportster. That is definitely the funniest thing outside of CrossFit.
I started Crossfit back in April/May 2008 with a little push from my friend and co-worker Jess Lasky. On my first day I didn't make it through the warm up and poor Lasky thought there may be the potential of needing to call the paramedics. I have accomplished so much since that first day and can do things I never thought possible aka a full situp :-). Now I love any workout that involves situps and rowing...crazy i know! Crossfit has taught me that anything is possible if you try...practice makes perfect. ACF is a community of great people and I am glad to be a part of it. I can't wait to see what the days ahead will bring!
Goals:
Kick Up HSPU's
Real Push-ups
Improve my running
I've been training since September/October of 2007. I love the
atmosphere and all of the people. Some of my favorite moments are
screaming "I can't breathe" during the "Fran/Diane" combination
workout, slipping on a pinecone while running backwards during
"Griff," puking during fight gone bad (then kept going), and doing
"Fran" while drunk. The only thing I don't like is that my right arm
goes numb for a few days if I do overhead squats with any weight more
than the bar.
I also got my nickname "Thor" from Crossfit which is pretty awesome.
Its not like you can just give yourself a nickname and make people
call you that. Plus what are the odds that the nickname is cool? It
rolls off the tongue a lot easier than my previous nickname of
"mysterious pale loner."
Outside of Crossfit I enjoy heavy metal, cooking, avoiding sunburns,
and watching HGTV.
My goals for 2009 include: getting a tattoo, finding a flask full of
30 year old scotch in an old coat pocket, getting thrown out of a
casino for winning too much, replacing the tile around the shower in
my master bathroom, time travel, and doing a handstand pushup on the
hood of a 69 Dodge Charger while fleeing from ninjas. (hopefully on
the same day).
I joined ACF in Dec. 2008 after learning about it at a capital district
triathlon meeting. I instantly loved it. I love the intensity and
variety of the WODs. I ran the NYC marathon about 1 month before I
joined, and I have definitely felt worse at the end of some WODs then I
did at the end of that marathon! My favorite WOD is anyone that
involves running! I also enjoy the pain of OHS. One of my major goals
is to finish an ironman before I'm 30 (I'm 27). I think the strength
I'm building at ACF will help me reach that goal.
Outside of ACF I am a lab rat, trying to finish up my PhD in
Microbiology at Albany Medical College. I work with a bacteria that is
a potential bioweapon, so that keeps things interesting! I also enjoy
running, swimming, biking and skiing (downhill and cross country).
I joined ACF sometime back in May after my sister-in-law, Kari N., somehow tricked me into trying it out. She was going with the Nisky Mom's Group and even though I'm not a mom myself, I felt comfortable with those ladies. Jay was a little easier on us "moms" back in those days. I found a camraderie that made me feel supported so I kept coming back. I love watching everybody else challenge themselves and grow stronger and fitter. Usually you'll find me at the 9 AM class or chatting about spiritual stuff with Lenora during the noon class, though I occasionally wander into an evening class if my schedule permits.
I've never been much of a gym rat, I was more of a yoga girl who did more meditating than exercizing. Now that I've been doing crossfit I am, as the expression goes, "in the best shape of my life." I am a whiner with low self-confidence who is fairly immature when it comes to fitness, but I am growing up. I'm in the zone, vegetarian style, unafraid of tofu. My favorite workouts usually involve HSPU's. Deadlifts make me cry sometimes but that's okay with me.
In my life outside of ACF I am married to Bill Levering (a squash player) and I have two great stepkids, Ryan (a fanatical racquetball player) and Kim (who worked out at ACF once with me and whose respect for me grew after the experience). I adore my nephews (Kari's children). I am the pastor of a church in Glenmont, and I feel priveleged to hold this job, because I have the opportunity every day to talk with people about things that really matter. I will happily perform the marriage ceremony of any Albany Crossfitter free of charge, since I consider you all a part of my community. I suppose I'd also do your funeral for free, but lets not talk about that.
I’ve been having fun following Jason around ever since his arrival at the Court Club over 7 years ago – WHAT !!!! – from cardio boxing, to Ashtanga, to spin class, personal training and since the beginning of ACF October 2007. Thanks to his constant motivation and encouragement I’ve learned so much and have become stronger than ever imagined. And, at my age, that’s saying a lot!
I’ve met so many wonderful fun people at ACF who inspire me to work hard (I still can’t believe they talked me into doing the Turkey Trot but am thrilled I did) – what a great community !!!
I’ve been married to my husband, Rodger, for 33 years and we have no children. We continue to have a life full of fun sailing, skiing and just getting crazy with our friends. I’ve worked for the Epilepsy Foundation for over 11 years.
By now you must know that I spell my name with one n (Dona) and I am the senior member of Crossfit (yikes!). I never thought I'd be writing that down to share with the world. I began my relationship with Jason about 5+ years ago when he was my trainer at the Court Club. Of course, once he established Crossfit, it was impossible to "just say no," so I joined the group. As far as favorite WODS, I just do what I'm told and try not to think about the pain. I do prefer the AMRAP in 20 minutes; intense and quick. I usually come to Crossfit a minimum of four days, but many weeks try for five.
I have two children; Todd who is 38 and lives in Albany in a community residence and Jonathan, who is 35, who lives in Boyton Beach, Florida and works as a Deputy Sheriff for the Palm Beach Sheriff's Dept. As most of you know, my Granddaughter Gab is 16 and will soon be returning to Crossfit. She has 3 younger siblings, who also call me Grandma. I work part-time as a special education teacher and am pleased that I still love what I'm doing.
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do.
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Since December 1, 2008, the day in which I joined ACF, I have been forced to face my personal fears every time I have entered through the gym door. Many times this fear has “paralyzed” me to the point in which I tried to avoid coming to the gym. However, each time I have “looked fear in the face” and completed a warm-up and WOD that day, my overall confidence and strength have grown.
It was that first night when I almost gave up on completing the WOD (burpees of course) - but it was the other people there that night that didn’t give up on me. “Marine Mike” got down and did the burpees with me and the rest cheered me on until I completed all of them. I knew right then that I had found what I had been looking for all these years! My continued motivation and courage comes from the support and encouragement of everyone at ACF. I especially have to thank Jason for believing in me even though I didn’t always believe in myself. Thanks for not giving up on me!
When I am not challenging my own fears at ACF, I am helping 3rd graders challenge their fears and grow as individuals. I am newly married (Feb. 2008) and am the proud “mom” to a 2-½ year old Feist named “Foxy Roxy”. I live with my husband and dog in New Concord, NY.
I have been coming to ACF since the end of June 2008. I started after always making fun of Jay about it at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Up until ACF, I have never gone regularly to the gym to lift weights in my life. Now I am there 4-5 times a week! Prior to ACF I was a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Bruno Tostes in Latham. Since starting my second year at Albany Med, I don't have as much time to train and had to take a break.
Favorite Movies: Fight Club, Vanilla Sky, Seven
Favorite Music: Starting Line, Something Corporate, Rage Against the Machine
Favorite Workout: Dr. Rhabdo (What other workout makes you sore for 6 days?)
PRs: 420 Deadlift, muscle up (9/23/08), 2k Row 7:25.7
Goals: Sub 4 minute Fran, 850 CFT, hold a perfect hand stand, Be a good doctor
I started at ACF in March 2008 after Laura M. challenged the Nisky Mom's Group to come and work out with her a couple of mornings a week. I was a stay-at-home mom with a 3-year old and an 8-month old, was heavier than I had ever been, and had absolutely no energy. I couldn't even complete the warm-up on the first day.
Now, at the age of 30, I'm (by far) in the best shape of my life. I can jog a mile (even 2) for the first time in my life, do an Rx'd Fran and Fight Gone Bad, bandless pull-ups, a handstand, and so many other things that it would be impossible to list them. My energy has increased exponentially, and after starting on the Zone in September I've lost 30 lbs. I have so much left that I want to accomplish at ACF, and every time I go, I know that I'm making strides towards those goals.
Some of my PRs are a 200 lb. deadlift, 194 FGB (Rx'd), and bandless pullups. My favorite WOD is probably FGB (how else can you work so hard in 15 minutes?), and I can't wait to be able to do a proper HSPU. I've got the handstand; now I just need the pushup!
Outside of ACF, I'm a former chemical engineer, married to a chemical engineer, currently working as a full-time cook, chauffeur, barber, and all those other things that come with being a stay-at-home mom of two boys.
Found Crossfit in a magazine and then looked it up online. He began doing the WODs on his own at the Y. He did this for about 6 months until he and Heather could finally get in to ACF for a Saturday class to get officially started.
Outside of Crossfit, he works for Samaritan Hospital and is a father of 3. Other than work and working out, he enjoys pretty much any outdoor activity.
started Crosfitting sometime during July of 2008. My first day was
a round of two of the warm up, and a whole 5 rounds of "Cindy" my
second day I met pukie. After this, two things were obvious, 1. I
was in love. 2. I discovered I was definitely no where near as
badass as I had previous thought.
Things about crossfit I love: The community, the support, the
friendships, setting PR's, watching friends set PR's, looking at a WoD
and saying "that doesn't look too bad" only to be proven horrible
wrong, watching endless crossfit video's online, checking the site
constantly till it's updated, marley, finishing a 20-40 minute workout
and not being able to name one song that played during that time,
running into people and asking "did you go today?/you going tomorrow?"
HSPU, push jerk, rowing short distances, skinning the cat, sweat
angels, making a fool out of myself in front of such and involved and
approving audience.
Things about crossfit I hate: Burpees.
Everyday really is something new, a brand new adventure constantly.
I am a Crossfitter, and this is my manifesto. You may stop me, but you
can't stop us all...
I initially found out about Crossfit from a coworker (Albert Vasquez), and was intrigued after watching several videos on the Crossfit main site. After coming in and giving it a try in mid-November 2008, I was hooked by the intensity and challenge of the workouts.
I work at a video game company, playing games all day, it’s tough, but it is not all fun and games, it’s just games. When not a work or at Crossfit you can usually find me in the pool. I started swimming competitively when I was eight and last year I swam 2.2 million yards, yes, you read that right. I like to race in the pool and out in the open water where anything can and does happen. I have competed in triathlons (sprint to Ironman distances), run races from 5Ks to 50Ks, and have biked double-centuries.
My goals are to be ranked top ten in my age group nationally for swimming, and to win the masters national 2-mile open water cable swim this summer in my age group (this year it is at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid). And, I would also like to complete my 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks this summer (4 more to go!), and enjoy every Crossfit workout.
I started CF in May 2008 (after months of resistance) and I haven't looked back since. When I started, I couldn't do a pushup, I couldn't deadlift 95lbs, I could barely squat with PVC, and my 5k time was well over 30 minutes. In the past 7 months I have made so many improvements to my workouts (and my attitude towards most new things!) that they are almost too much to mention--but in brief: real push-ups, an Rx Fran, a 28 min 5k, a 217 FGB (Rx) and a 430 CFT. Thank you, ACF!
I started Crossfit November 12, 2008. My favorite WODs so far have been "Fight Gone Bad" and "The Descent", I don't have a least favorite because they're all good for something that I really need to work on.
Outside of Crossfit, I work for the statewide teachers union - I used to be a teacher years ago. I also study Karate, run, and play an occasional rugby game.
I like candlelight dinners, walks on the beach, and jumping on moving treadmills.
Well to be honest i walked into ACF w/ the intention of only going for a few WODs, to help me pass the CPAT(firefighter test). Next thing i know i have 6 months of WODs. I have to thank fred g for getting the idea in my head. At the moment i'm going to school in maine and follow the ACF site. Even better than the WODs are the people from ACF i've made a ton of great friends. See you guys soon.
I started coming to ACF after I went to a pose run with my mom (Joy) at the end of August 2008. I have always enjoyed working out and I gave ACF a try. So thanks to my mom I am proud member of ACF. I enjoy coming to ACF to workout with a great group of people! Everyone is friendly, supportive, and wants to improve their overall fitness. I love any WOD that has some type of running involved. I have always been a runner, so at first it was difficult not to run everyday. I still enjoy running and appreciate it a lot more when I can go for a long run. I don’t have a least favorite WOD because each of them is a unique challenge for the day, although I don’t really care for deadlifts.
When Greg first showed me the videos of Crossfit, I thought these people are crazy, I could never do any of that. Although, after watching the changes in his body and his fitness level increase I thought maybe I should give it a try. So, I started in early November and absolutely love it. The first 2 weeks were really hard and I would come home and sit with a heating pad for the night and could hardly walk up and down the stairs. I am still working on getting the basics but have already seen and felt such a difference in my body and mind. My first CFT was 385 with a 200 lb deadlift, which I was totally shocked by.
My least favorite thing is burpees, I dread them. My favorite WODs involve weights, just b/c I really feel that I am improving my strenght and surprising myself. I also love the encouragement from the coaches and all the other crossfitters. If you need inspiration to finish a workout there is always someone there to say "You can do it!"
Outside of ACF, I am a stay at home Mom with 3 children-7, 4 1/2, and 3 1/2. We also have a dog and 2 cats.
The first time I saw Crossfit, watching a WOD online at the main site, I was hooked, I knew this was exactly what I needed to get stronger and faster. And, best of all, it was around the corner from my office, how sweet is that! If it wasn't for the restrictions of my lunch hour, I would be tempted to stay all afternoon, seriously. I think Jason is glad I have a lunch hour, as my biggest challenge is rest, but I am learning, slowly. When I started in November 2008, I thought I was in pretty good shape, but I realized after a intro WOD of five minutes of 7 pullups (green band) and 7 pushups (on my knees after 10), that this was definitely a very different kind of fitness ... this was going to make a huge difference and be so much more fun than circuit weights at the Y! I really enjoy the challenge of every workout, and especially the encouragement and support of my fellow lunchtime crossfitters.
Sports was an early focus in my life as long as I can remember, starting early with kick ball and wiffle ball games in my back yard, and continuing with team sports through college. Looking for something competitive to try after college, I began competing in running races in my mid-to late 20s, from 5Ks to the New York City marathon (awesome!) , and I have been competing locally in sprint and Olympic triathlon distances for the past four summers. I am 41 years old, and I have found that pretty much every triathlon I have competed in the overall female winner is usually in the 40-44 age group … so I know I am still in my prime!
My goals this summer are to qualify for the USAT age group nationals for Olympic distance triathlon and to run a sub19 minute 5K (before I am too old!). I also plan to do some open water swim races and continue to work on hiking the 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks; I have a long way to go, getting my first two this past fall.
And, now I have Crossfit goals as well ... figuring out the kipping pullup, a perfect L-sit, getting my head to the floor on a handstand pushup, double-unders, stronger squats (overhead, front, back, thrusters, sideways, whatever, they are all hard for me!) ... and faster WODs. I enjoy most the WODS that test my cardio fitness, but I am beginning to also challenge myself to do the prescribed weight if possible, even if that means a slower time ...especially after numerous comments from Jason, something like, "that's great, but did you do it at the prescribed weight?"
I work as a communication manager at the Center for Technology in Government, a research center at the University at Albany. I have two daughters, Abby, 9, who has already competed in 2 kids triathlons, and Willa 5, who is definitely a future crossfitter!
I am 28 yrs old. I joined ACF, I think around August 2008. My friend Katie (who is also a proud member) introduced me to it. I was a little concerned about committing because I travel weekly with my job and wasn’t sure how often I could make it. Jason and Niki both told me that any time I could give would work. Then I came to a couple of WOD’s and seriously thought to myself “I don’t know if I am crossfit material” But I pushed through that and anyways…Here I am enjoying every minute. Everyone is so friendly and encouraging and that is what keeps me coming back. I really don’t have a favorite/least favorite WOD, but “FRAN” is fun. I just know the WODs ALWAYS KICK MY BUTT. But yet I always come back for more J
Outside of ACF, I am an applications specialist for a medical diagnostic company based out of Arizona. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and pretty much love any activity outdoors, whether it be hiking or swimming. However, this time of year with all of this snow, the slopes are calling my name J I have one younger sister who is a police officer.
My name is Chiara (pronounced Shy-ra) I'm 29, soon to be 30 (YIKES)and I started Crossfit in August '08, after many years of spinning and step classes, personal training, etc etc.
I can't keep track of all the names of the WODs but I guess a favorite WOD of mine would include some wall balls, some knees to elbows, and some weight work and would be done to Led Zeppelin. :) I really dislike rowing (even though I THINK I like it when I see it listed in a WOD) and I always end up upset when doing Kettle Bell swings, and like everyone else, I hate burpees. :) Every workout here is challenging but the great thing is they are all scalable to your ability and everyone's here to cheer you on. I've been amazed at the things I've accomplished. I can't imagine working out somewhere else, it's such a unique family environment I love it.
In my life outside of ACF, I work for a publishing company and also wait tables part time. I enjoy playing tennis, running 5k's (even though I'm not very good, lol) going to concerts, visiting my former hometown of Ft. Lauderdale and hitting the beach whenver possible and hanging out with friends and family. I'm also not quite the beast in real life I look like in the pics on the site! :)
I work as a janitor at Harvard even though I know I am smarter than most of the professors. Sometimes there are math equations on the blackboards of the class rooms I clean at night. I mean really simple stuff, so I solve them to pass the time.
I've only been doing the cross-fit thing for about 2.5 months so I'm still pretty much a newbie. The way I discovered cross-fit was actually by luck; or fate, if you believe in that sort of stuff ;-) I was out of town one weekend visiting with a buddy of mine and we went rock-climbing; it was the first time I had tried rock-climbing and to my surprise and disappointment I struggled with it. I figured I would do somewhat decent given my prior fitness background; I was an avid weightlifter and runner for several years so I figured I had at least a good balance of strength and stamina. Over the next few days, after the rock-climbing, my wrists became incredibly sore and it was then I realized why I probably struggled during rock-climbing; I was missing the fitness level in several muscles that are probably used a lot for rock-climbing (i.e. my strength and stamina was specialized). A few days later, I came in to the court club to try out their indoor rock climbing wall, as I wanted to get better at rock-climbing. While I was there I stumbled onto what was going on further down the hall and so I decided to go check it out. The rest is pretty much history; I saw what people were doing and then I talked to Jason and he explained to me the whole concept of cross-fit. After that, I was pretty much sold.
My goal from cross-fit is to get my body in well-rounded shape so that the next time I try rock-climbing, or any other new sport, my body is better prepared to handle it.
I don't really have a least or most favorite WOD; they're all butt kicking ;-)
I love the social element of ACF; I haven't really had this for quite some time in my fitness routine. It's cool because I get the opportunity to see what others are doing (or have already done) and it gives me something to push for, I can draw from the knowledge of my fellow crossfiteers, plus I always like meeting new people.
When I'm not at ACF, I am working as a software engineer in the video games industry; I guess that makes me a dork: "Nerd by day crossfit warrior by night".
I'm always for trying out new forms of sports/atheletics. In the last couple of years, since moving down to the area, I've started getting into snowboarding, rockclimbing, ultimate frisbee, motorcycling, and of course crossfit training.
I am 24 and currently live in the Stockade of Schenectady with my kitty, (don't hate!) Manhattan. I work for New Visions (Albany ARC) as a Program Manager. Basically I run 3 apartments for 8 women who have Mental Retardation, Schizophrenia and other Differing Disabilities.
I was blessed to be introduced to Crossfit in September of 2008. It has served a lot more for me than just motivation to be active. Crossfit has helped me to realize that I am worth feeling good about myself and that I am able to do this for myself and for no one else.
I love any workout that makes me feel like I can't go even one more second because when I do finally finish it, it takes me one step closer to taking "I can't" out of my vocabulary.
I do however get chills when I see the word, "Burpees" anywhere even near a WOD.
I have been at ACF basically since the beginning - I trained with Jay one on one prior to that to get ready for Figure competitions and drove him a bit nuts in the process:) My goals have changed a bit for this year and I plan on training for the qualifier in May just to challenge myself and also training to run a half marathon in June.
My favorite type of WODs are longer ones like filthy 50's etc.
I don't really have a least favorite WOD but I don't really like Deadlifts and rowing - I'm not that great at them so I know I have to work on those 2 things to get better.
What I love about ACF are all the great people of course! (and Marley too!) Everyone is very supportive and positive and a lot of fun.
I am a pharmaceutical sales representative and I used to teach a bunch of different classes at the Y which I am currently taking a break from.
I am married to Kerry (who I can't seem to drag in) and I have a 2 year old Bloodhound named Ruby.
I started crossfit last January. I will admit, it took a good couple months of convincing before I would go. I mean, kettlebells, burpees, GI Janes??? I had never heard these terms before! I was so intimidated! After my first week, however, I was hooked. I left the "globo gym" and never looked back. Since crossfit I have done so many things I never thought I'd do. Pushups, deadlifts, burpees...just to name a few. It is an amazing thing to be a part of and you will never find more encouragement, motivation, or teamwork than at ACF. You learn that "I can't" (especially if Jason is around) is not an option, and you find out that you can!
Victor Marwin - 27 years old
Started Crossfit in Aug 2008. Used to be a lightweight rower, long
distance triathlete, ran marathons, ultramarathons. I'm an Officer in
the Navy and currently I'm a medical student at Albany Med. I like
"Helen", "Murphy" and "Badger". The best thing about Albany Crossfit
is the people.
I have been coming to ACF since the end of July 2008. I am so amazed at how much I have accomplished since then and I can't wait to see myself do more. I don't have a favorite/worst WOD, although I get really scared when I see boxjumps!! I am truly happy to be a part of ACF.
I am a Biology teacher at Schenectady High School which I absolutely love and I also work at Albany Medical Center on Sundays and during the summer.
The day my life changed was February 15 2008. It's hard to believe it's almost a year! I am going to be 29 in two weeks and I have never felt better! My first day I could not finish the warm up, and now I can accomplish incredible things I never imagined I could do- thanks in huge part to Jays' "yes you can" attitude and all of Nikki's tips on form. All of our coaches and members at ACF are a huge part of why I am able to do the things I can do, I thank everyone for my success.
Some of my PRs - deadlift 280, press 75, squat 160, pull ups 11, CFT- 505.
Least favorite WOD- Fran
Favorite WOD- does anyone really have a favorite WOD? - Fight Gone Bad
I live in Amsterdam with boyfriend Chad Ahr and our "son" Zeus - the best 100lb lap dog there ever was!! I am the oldest of three siblings, a sister- Mikki 23yrs, brother- Tom 12yrs, and my youngest brother Tyler 3yrs. I enjoy the outdoors, good movies, cooking and spending time with family. I commute to Albany for work Mon-Fri, I work for Aetna Insurance as a customer service representative, I have the joy of having people yell at me all day because something wasn't paid, so another great thing about crossfit is that it's a really great way to release all my frustrations!
I started Crossfit in Oct. 07. When I started I couldn’t even do an air squat correctly and hated running. After barely surviving my first Crossfit work out I knew I had a lot of work to do. This fall I ran the NYC Urbanathlon with Jess and Ben from Crossfit which is something I never would have done a year before and can’t wait to do again. Favorite workouts – Badger and Jackie.
Age:15
Favorite Exercise: either clean and jerk or box jump
I started CrossFit to get in shape for lacrosse, but after a few months I became addicted and am now doing CrossFit full time because I can't imagine being away from the WODs and the people for three months. My favorite thing about CrossFit is that it is like another family. I go with my mom and my brother.
